In the first episode public defender Jerry Kellerman is introduced as a passionate attorney who finds himself often questioning the justice system while defending his clients. Jerry is faced with humble pie when he must appear before a judge who despises him in order to defend a client he feels is innocent. Michelle runs up against her boss in the district attorney’s office, who doesn’t want a wrongful conviction to embarrass the DA’s office, when she attempts to correct a mistake made in a rape trial.
